The Challenge

GCSE Drama is one of the most misunderstood qualifications on the curriculum. Parents often assume it's mostly performance, but in reality, 40% of the grade comes from a written exam and another 30% from a devising portfolio that demands analytical, reflective writing.

Meanwhile, Drama departments in schools are often stretched thin. Class sizes of 20 or more mean students get limited individual feedback on their performance work, and even less time for the one-to-one writing support that makes the difference between a Grade 5 and a Grade 8.

That's where we come in.

Curriculum

What We Cover

Our GCSE Drama course is structured around the three components of the qualification, with teaching tailored to your child's specific exam board (AQA, Edexcel or Eduqas).

Component 1 • 40%

Devising

This is where most students need the most help. We guide students through the entire devising process: developing a response to the stimulus, researching and applying practitioner techniques (Brecht, Artaud, Stanislavski, Berkoff and others), creating original material, and writing the devising log or portfolio. We focus heavily on translating practical, instinctive decisions into the analytical language that examiners want to see.

Component 2 • 20%

Performance from Text

Students perform two extracts from a published play for an external examiner. We work on vocal and physical technique, characterisation, staging, and the specific skills that the mark scheme rewards. We also help students choose texts that play to their strengths and allow them to demonstrate range.

Component 3 • 40%

Written Exam

The written paper tests knowledge of a set text and evaluation of a live theatre production. We teach students how to analyse a text from the perspective of a performer, designer and director. We work on essay structure, use of subject-specific terminology, and the kind of imaginative, detailed responses that earn top marks. We also prepare students for the live theatre evaluation, helping them write with precision and flair about productions they've seen.
